Architectural statement.This home evolved from the cottage built in 1976, designed as described in Steven Mazey's Ottawa Citizen article June 20th, 1987. The original 25 foot square cubic form has undergone two additions ( 1995 and 2005 ) and stands today as a unified statement that continues to express the architect's original design intent. It may seems unconventional yet fulfilling to leave materials raw and unfinished, not just as a result of budget, but to find that inherent soul that emerges with an honest reflection of the true nature of materials and place.In this regard, one might say that the approach falls within a growing category of Canada architecture that boldly contemporizes rural building forms, creating a vernacular that redefines the regions design aesthetics in the process. It reinterprets pioneer barn building characteristics by applying a disciplined classical theory of proportion and the application and of the latest in building technology.Today the building has mellowed and stands well-integrated with its site where the interior highlights the surroundings, using the environment outside as a backdrop to enjoy. The woodland setting has been developed as a shade garden emphasizing the natural features of outcrops, cascading stream and river views, with defined edges between the cultivated and the wild environment.
